Central Budapest is quite literally the king of laid-back cities. Geauxing Places Travel knows this to be true because, as a full-service travel agency in Denham Springs, Louisiana, we offer services that plan and organize trips to exotic cities and locations around the world, like Budapest.
Budapest is one city an appreciable number of our travelers often revisit after going there just once on vacation. We suspect it may have something to do with the permissive nature of the place: There are very few to almost no curfews; there’s street food on every corner and alcohol is in abundance. But there are also some really great things to see and do.
Here are 3 things to do while visiting Budapest, Hungary:
- Szimpla Kert
A Szimpla Kert is what you can loosely call a ‘ruin bar’. It’s essentially a dilapidated building with a large courtyard furnished with artwork. That’s pretty much all it is, but it’s now Budapest’s most popular spot for night events.
Opening way back in the Jewish Quarter in 2001, several bars have tried to imitate the look of the Szimpla Kert, but none have thus far managed to achieve its success and popularity, effectively making it the undisputed top spot for night parties.
The bar is a great place to hang out and meet new people. We suggest you try a shot of Unicum when you get there. Its liqueur, but one made with traditional Hungarian ingredients. This is NOT a drink you will soon forget.
- Fisherman’s Bastion
This majestic viewing terrace, erected between the years 1895 and 1902, was a monument to the state of Hungary itself. It was built to commemorate and celebrate Hungary’s 1000th birthday. You can find it at the Buda bank of the Danube (Castle Hill).
Go there and you will be met with a surreal sight. The color, design, and beauty of the place give it an appearance that would fit more in fantasy story than reality. Go atop one of the many yet ornate turrets and watch boats floating atop the Danube. While you’re still up there, stroll over to the Ruszwurm Confectionery, one of Budapest’s oldest and arguably most popular patisseries (bakery).
- Szechenyi Spa Baths
Depending on the time of day you go there, the Szechenyi Spa Baths could be one of two things. By day, it’s an oasis with spa treatments, massages, saunas, and other services you would expect in any other standard spa. When the weekend rears its happy head, however, what do you think the baths turn into? Party central, of course.
