Sitka is one of Alaska’s less traveled and most beautiful destinations. We’ve been there countless of times but it never gets old! Sitka is located on Baranof island southeast of the state. With beauty that can’t be captured in words and attractions that will leave you awestruck, Sitka is exactly the kind of place for a unique vacation.
If you have even the faintest interest in heading to Alaska for your next vacation, come see us and we’ll convince why it’s more than a great choice. We are Geauxing Places Travel, a full-service travel agency from Denham Springs, Louisiana, and we can’t wait to get you to Sitka! Below are 3 things that you will enjoy doing in this fun place.
First off, you should know that Sitka is very walkable. Take the Lincoln Street when you set off because that’s where all the historic places are. Even better, they are mostly within walking distance of each other. Sitka is quite small, so a walk along Lincoln Street will bring you to some of the town’s historical landmarks.
Take a visit St. Michael's Cathedral and marvel at its architecture, great history, and learn about what it means to the people there. Next, pass by the Sheet’ khan community and learn a bit about Sitka music. Don’t forget to explore the Russian Bishop’s house and pay a visit to the Sheldon Jackson Museum too. It’s the best place to be if you want to learn about the Tlingit people and the history of Sitka. There are also guided tours if you don’t fancy touring around by yourself.
The National historic park at Sitka National Park is also the oldest in Alaska. It was launched to commemorate the battle for Sitka and is about 113-acres, so that’s a lot of space awaiting your eager and curious feet. Its main attractions are the twenty totem poles erected around the park.
One you’re done with that, hike the Russian memorial loop, the totem pole trail, and the river view trail. Another great option is to take self or guided tours to enjoy an in-depth explanation of the park’s flora and fauna.
Shopping
Purchase food items like salmon and berries and take them home; you know, take a little ‘Sitka flavor’ back home. You can also purchase Tlingit silver-work, masks, carvings, garments, nesting dolls, lacquer boxes and much more. The variety of souvenirs in Sitka is truly astounding.
